Dweezil - This analysis of VH! is simply the best I've ever heard. As a guitar player, the parts you pick out of Eruption and You Really Got Me and the rest are the parts that so few pick out but are the parts I've always loved (and struggled with :). Clearly have spent a thousand hours on this like many of us. Thank you so much for this unparalleled dissection!!

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the kind words. I'm so glad you're enjoying the podcast so far. I think you'll have fun with the next episode! Paul Gilbert does a lot of great guitar playing while talking about Van Halen II.

Edward G.

Just finished episode 1 & starting #2. Such great content, thanks for putting these together. Long live the King

Thanks Edward! Glad you're enjoying it!

Didn't even know this existed! Couldn't buy the 5150 Bundle fast enough. Love the old stories. Love how much Frank was idolized by the musicians and guitar greats we know so well today. Hope more people can listen to this. Dweezil are you releasing a new concert? All the best and hope 2021 we will all be able to hit the road again. Cheers everyone.

Thanks Jared! Glad you're enjoying it. Yes, I'll be releasing a new concert film soon. It will only be available on my site.

Episode #2 is awesome. See, these kinds of in-depth shows are really what I love to listen to/watch. Podcasts are great ideas, of course. But content such as the stuff in episode #2 is really what music fans need to experience. There is so much more than simply talking about music. Going into the rabbit hole when it comes to the nuances of music is really what will help audiences go deeper with any music.

Funny enough, my introduction to EVH started with " 1984 " through the song, " Jump. " But it didn't take a genius to see what these guys were doing. I went backwards when it came to hear EVH's music, as an influence ( I actually heard " Fair Warning " before hearing VH1 ). To this day, I feel " Fair Warning " is the greatest EVH guitar sound let alone the greatest recorded guitar tone ever put to tape. Sheer audio bliss.

Stellar content, Dweezil. Nicely done. Looking forward to the newer shows ( especially with Joe Satriani ).

Fantastic interview with Steve. Thanks so much for putting this content together. Listening to Steve recall what is was like as a guitarist, not just a hobbyist but as someone going to school for music, in 1978 listening to Eruption for the fist time was wonderful. As he was someone studying guitar at the time I'd be curious to know if Steve had any idea what was going on in the tapping section. I know the technique existed before Eddie but I have no idea how well know it was to guitarists of the day in 1978 or if Steve had heard that sound before that moment.

I wish I could remember the first time I heard it but I know I hadn't started playing guitar at the time so the idea of this crazy sound coming from an instrument that I had a familiarity with wasn't possible. I can only equate it to listening to Shampoohorn in 1994 and hearing Rubberband for the first time. I remember it like it was yesterday, I was laying on my bed with headphones almost drifting to sleep after having worked all day. It took all of about 4 notes and I sat up like as if I had just rose from the dead. I knew it was guitar but it was a sound I had never heard before and I couldn't wrap my head around what I was hearing. I probably listed to it half a dozen times before I thought to look at the liner notes for some information about what I was hearing. So thank you Dweezil for that cherished memory and that wonderful piece of music.

Hi Lance,

Thanks for your comment. I'm glad you're enjoying the podcast. In next week's episode, Paul Gilbert talks about some stuff that might give you an answer to your question about EVH's tapping.

I'm glad you like Rubberband. I'm going to do a new mix of that one of these days.

Best, DZ
