I’m afraid due to family commitment yesterday I had to miss the first listening party. Is there a link here on the site where we can watch the video of it? Thanks for any help!
Batten makes a very solid point, "..even if he's worked out a solo, it never sounds worked out, it never sounds pre-thought out or stiff, but generally it just sounds so natural and off the cuff, it's quite the delight."
Hi Dweezil , love the 1984 episode...Aces .... !!! just A1 !! ... Can I ask a question for the listening party ? , Did Edward ever suggest where he came up with the idea to use the variac ? as it is another of his "Genius moments " .
He said in an interview when he got the Marshall, it was set at the English setting (240v) so it was only getting half-power INTO it when he plugged into the American mains (A.C. power). Je knew something was "wrong",as it was so quiet, but he loved the sound. So he found that starving the amp of voltage made it sound cool, more sag/compression, and he could dial in that amount with a Variac.
Hi Dweezil! The 1984 episode was well worth the wait. Outstanding job on this.
Of all of the episodes, I feel this is my all time favorite. It was so refreshing to hear Jennifer and you go deep on this, musically. The previous episodes are wonderful, of course. But this one had more of a " scientific " conversation on the actual music ( I'm more of a nerd for this stuff! ). And, it was so awesome hearing the alternate solo section version for " Girl Gone Bad. " Just killer stuff!
Jennifer is stellar in terms of dissecting any music and help listeners find the sweet spots, whether it's Jeff Beck or even Edward Van Halen. She can really get to the " soul " of a performance. My favorite part was the combination of the " Hot For Teacher " tapping intro lick and that Holdsworth lick ( from " Road Games " ). What a trip!
Thanks Dave! I'll be writing a blog tomorrow which will be asking for the community to submit questions for the live listening party. I'll be looking forward to your questions!
Oh man I was sure hoping you or Jennifer were going to actually break down how the intro to Panama begins! Would’ve been cool to hear a count-off and other tips to playing it from a drummer and a guitarist point of view. I think you have enough guitar geeks or musicians who can relate to such a discussion if only for a minute.
Cool! Really appreciate that. and if it's a similar issue I'd say the same thing about 'Hot For Teacher'. Where the H E L L is a VHDownbeat? hahhaha Best, JT
Great episode...as usual. How many VH boots do you have? I just listened to a 1984 concert from Montreal on vhnd.com. Such a great concert. They nailed Girl Gone Bad that night. 1984 is such an awesome album. Thanks for going deep into the albums. It’s going to be very interesting to get details on the next phase of VH...the Hagar years.
Fantastic Episode and well worth the wait. Your point about Roth and the lyrics is a great one and it made me go back and appreciate Girl Gone Bad.
Interesting that a lot of the tracks on this one are in regular tuning (vs Eb). Other than Cradle Will Rock I can't think of as many Roth Era tunes that were. Probably keyboard driven but Hot for Teacher? Why do you think that was?
Hi Guys, The RWTD guitar presets have not been made yet. They will be made during the episode about reverse-engineering the EVH sound. There's a lot of research and development to do along the way. They will be very accurate once they are completed!
DWEEEEEZILLLL!!!!!!! SWEET!!!!!! To my surprise there is a treat this morning on the East coast lol! Cant wait and thanks for the "updates n trailers" Already sounds kinda sick 5 mins in
Excellent podcasts! Such great, detailed information for those studying the EVH style!
I'm curious if the presets are going to be released at a later date? I'm guessing the bonus episodes will be last. No rush, I have much content to absorb yet. Looking forward to the future episodes! Thank you!
I love your bootleg snippets. I’ve heard a lot of great soundboard bootlegs. Did EVH ever tell you why they never released any live albums in the early 80s? They would have sold millions.
Hoping that WVH finds some great shows that finally see an official release.
ive always hoped for an expansive VH box set with demos, live tracks, instrumentals etc.
Speaking of Wolfie ... the stuff he's putting out is so impressive. His song writing is really solid ... his vocals are great (I appreciate them much more for the stuff he is doing as opposed to trying to fill in the Michael Anthony backing vocals shoes). I think WVH is going to really move the VH legacy in a great direction in the coming decades. Might not be Eddie/Alex VH type of stuff ... but still really great stuff. I can't wait to see what he does.
***and yes ... I too hope the estate eventually finds some wonderful gems in the vault and releases some great 'expansive box set'.
They said that they recorded mostly what the band sounded like "live" in the studio, so they didn't see a need to release a live album. Sadly, that's not the point - a live show has the interaction and looseness that even "live" studio playing doesn't capture. Sadly there are no professionally-recorded shows in the WBros vault, just a few pieces on the shows where they did live video shoots ("Dance the Night Away" "Unchained" etc). I don't remember any pro-radio shows, like King Biscuit etc - ever done either. Sadly, the Japan live record is all we get, officially...
I suggest that everyone go back and listen to the available episodes again while we wait for the 1984 episode. Such good stuff. I think the Nuno and Blues episodes are my favorites.
Dweezil !!! Please do not buckle to any perceived 'pressure' of sticking to your originally stated weekly release timeline.
Though it may be disappointing for most of us to wait longer than we thought we would have to ... let creativity drive this project. If you find more goodies and nuggets to include in an episode ... please do take that time. So far every episode has been beyond amazing and enjoyably to listen to. So whatever you are doing ... keep it up ... you may hear some claims of 'disappointments' or chatter of 'frustration' ... but I think even those mentioning that would agree ... just do what you have to to make these the best they can be!
On a side not ... i just finished transcribing your Confessions tune 'Obviously Influenced by the Devil' ... I now continue my pleading to do a future podcast series on that album! lol
I'll never stop!!! I'm like "Q" ... except ... with more of a positive vibe. lol
Love this podcast series. Been an awesome listen so far. That said, really disappointing that there has been a month-long wait for the new episode. Episodes were promoted as being 'weekly' when I purchased the bundle. Not trying to be a jerk or anything, just stating the facts and my feelings.
I appreciate the feedback and I totally understand why you would be disappointed in the delay. I'm definitely behind schedule and I apologize.
I've been working on several episodes at once in order to get things rolling for Thursday deliveries again. It's actually quite a task to make the RWTD episodes and some of them require more time to create.
If it was an easy cookie-cutter process that would be ideal for production but it hasn't turned out to be the case since the goal is to make the episodes as in-depth as possible.
If I put way less effort into the episodes I could crank them out. At the end of the day, I don't think that would be what anyone wants.
Hopefully, all of our friends in the RWTD community will be able to understand that there are benefits when the episodes can be presented properly. Being such a fan of the music myself, I really try my best to deliver content that presents new information and perspectives. All things considered, it's honestly very time-consuming to do all of the research and editing. I do it all myself and the information is very personalized. The episodes are the way they are because of that effort.
That said, I'm aware that you all want to hear them more frequently and so do I! Lots of good stuff is coming very soon!
They should all be downloadable for you as long as you're selecting the files from your proper bundle. If you have the 5150 bundle, you would listen and download from the 5150 player and so on. If you are having trouble downloading from the correct location let me know and we will see if there is something weird going on. We will definitely get you sorted out.
Thank you Sir. I am working from the 5150 bundle. When I select an episode it brings me to a “streaming” page. I have not been able to locate a download option. I didn’t really take note till the last comments about downloads. I just always make sure I have WiFi access. Thanks for your attention to this. Feel bad asking
Thank you so much !!!! I didnt know about blog. I was on a long drive and listened to the first 3 eps again. Vai and gilbert. The $50 was worth that. ( love to hear more of your stories as well. Can’t even imagine having those artists around you ,, your pops eddie Vai. )
I purchased your All-inclusive 5150 bundle of “Runnin’ with the Dweezil” podcast today but regrettably when I downloaded the files 4 of them were only in mp3 format (Both Steve Vai’s and both Blues Saraceno’s) and the others were all in wav format except for the Paul Gilbert one which was the only file that was actually in FLAC format.
I would appreciate it if you could look into this as I expected all the files to be in FLAC format as advertised.
I look forward to your feedback regarding this issue.
Thank you for your note. The FLAC files all exist and you will be receiving the link for them shortly. It's been a bit difficult to please everyone since I've received more notes from people asking for the files as mp3s and waves vs Flac. We have finally sorted out a way to make it work for everyone without things getting too confusing. Saty tuned for info on the link to the FLACs.
Yes I can help answer that. Production slowed down because I was able to learn some new information about the 1984 album that was worth including in the episode. It has taken extra time to complete the episode. I've also had a busy schedule recording future episodes while the guests were available.
Episode 10 is coming next. I appreciate you patience. Best, DZ
Hi. Apologies for another post but did you ever hear Ed jam on “fur elise”. Beethoven ? Stumbled upon a vid from 1986 ( cow place ) and at 1:20 he just starts playin and improvising on it. Not that long but long enough to vibe on it. I never heard anything like this. Thoughts??
I did see Ed play that Beethoven bit a few times. I'm pretty sure it was from the OU812 tour but would have to double check. It was cool to hear him play that bit. He didn't do anything else like that on any other tour.
Curious if you ever read Noel Monks book “Running with the devil “? Also you recommend any good books on eddie or the band? ( the photo books from Zloz are pretty cool)
I did read that one. I liked Van Halen Rising by Greg Renoff. I also really liked Ted Templeman's book. I haven't read David Lee Roth's book yet or Sammy Hagar's. I have those waiting in the wings.
Hi Steve , Kevin Dodd's Book on Eddie is very good - lots of details. There is a book due in October ( in the U.K) so you'll maybe get it earlier by Brad Tolinski about his conversations with Edward that have never been published.
Thanks!!! I been called sonny, Steve is a new one lol. I’ll check it out. VH rising was a great book,, dealt with the early years,,, monks running w/ devil was really good and the Zloz photo book on VH and Eddie are interesting to look at. Few pages of Dweezil “Rastafarian” guitar eddie have him

Where do you find the fractal packs here?
I don’t think they’re out yet. I was just acknowledging Austin buddy who is a fractal Pack creator. Check the forum

For more information about Eddie’s tunings, please check out my forum post on the subject: https://www.vhlinks.com/vbforums/threads/62695-Van-Halen-tunings-with-Peterson-strobe-tuner-reference
Can hear the attentive love and care that went into crafting this one DZ, Lots of yummy frosting. This one was quite a ride! Thank you amigo!
Nice to see a fellow Fractalite here! Thanks for the great preset packs! - WITELITE
That EVH moment in Germany was a BEAUTIFUL way to the end the 1984 episode...❤️.
Definitely. Finally got to finish it. So sweet

Well said Timothy!! I will wait as long as it takes as each episode is fantastic and keep getting better.
I also second the thought of having a detailed podcast on the Confessions album. Still one of my all time favorite albums.
Ditto.
