As Steve says “it’s a joy, when you find something like that”...this is a joy. Thank you so much for sharing these stories and putting all of this together. Listening to you and Steve reminiscing about the amazing times with Edward and Frank too. THANK YOU. Dweezil, please, please, please, one of these times, hopefully you could go to one of Steve’s Vai Academy camps. You would love it.
Wow... I knew this'd be good but it's better than I could've imagined. What a great way to wind down after a meal. I feel as though I already got my $51.50 worth (...and I'm only on 'I'm The One'!). Thank you, thank you, thank you Dweezil.
That was wonderful! Looking forward to episode 2. Someday we need to hear the full Steve Vai meets the ghost of Uncle Joe story. (Sounds like an episode of Scooby Doo)
This is gorgeous, Dweezil. Thank you. I don’t suppose the Fractal presets could be made available for manual entry on my crusty old Axe FX Ultra? Fractal ended support for the editor with the latest Mac release.
Thank you! I'll see what I can do to help you with your Fractal Request. You would be able to dial in the parameters by number but it's doubtful things would sound the same. I may still have an old Axe FX Ultra. It's possible I have some VH presets in there that might be a good starting point. I'll have to check and get back to you.
What a great interview. I'm a lifelong VH fan who remembers where he was when Eruption came out. I also have a purple Kramer Pacer circa 1982 (I have to check the serial # for the date). The guy was everything to me guitar wise. The Ice Cream Man stretches, the rhythm playing of I'm the One and Beautiful Girls and of course the soloing. And Fair Warning is my favorite album so can't wait to hear that one as I also remember picking the LP up and having to put the needle back to the beginning after hearing the first 30 seconds of Mean Streets.
And then to hear you've got 4hours with Nuno, who in my mind is the closest thing to an heir apparent to that style of playing. Great stuff and can't wait to hear it.(And if by chance you read this, your solo on Just the Way She is is brilliant)
Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you're enjoying the podcast so far. There's a ton of great stuff coming up! EP 2 with Steve Vai premieres tomorrow at noon PST and we go over the entire VH 1 first album song by song. Next week, my guest is Paul Gilbert who does a whole lot of guitar playing on the episode!
Glad you liked the solo on "Just The Way She Is." Best, DZ
The first episode with Vai was amazing! I bought the complete $51.50 package and am curious about the Premier Guitar subscription. I already have an online-only subscription to PG, but definitely want to get my hands on a printed version of the current issue with Ed on the cover. Should I head to the nearest magazine stand, or will this printed copy be included with the package that I bought? Thank you and keep up the great work.
Hi Steven, I'm glad you're enjoying the podcast so far and thanks for jumping in on it! I expect to hear from Premier Guitar today with the details for 5150 bundle owners. You'll receive an email about very soon. Best, DZ
Great interview. The Purple Kramer Pacer you and Steve mentioned. Rockinger Tremolo system. Heard Ed hated it. Picture of Ed on stage was from the Holdsworth show Steve saw.
Yeah. In the "VH Guitar Internet Universe", there never was an official name to it...few I came across... "The Purple Kramer ", " Kramer Multitape", "Kramer Multicolor". . I laughed when you referred to it as Fruity Pebbles. Yeah it it does look like the cereal, LOL. Got the 5150 package and look forward to the other upcoming interviews.
.....and then I find this?! 5150 bundle. Holy dental floss, Batman! I think we all need this right now. Thank you, Dweezil and Co.! All my favorite musicians AND gear talk...wow! Can’t wait to hear more about (I assume) the Circles/Rasta guitar. Keep up all the hard work. #floydandkahlerlivingtogether
Hey Dweezil, just bought the 5150 bundle. Great to hear you and Steve chat about EVH. I was just wondering when/how I get access to the bonus items, such as the subscription to Premier Guitar, the Kemper settings and the Q&A? Apologies if you've already posted this somewhere, but I can't find it.
Thanks for jumping in on the 5150 bundle, I'm glad you're enjoying it.
No worries about the questions. I'm working on a page for the site that will keep everyone informed. We are in the thick of it with episode production at the moment.
You'll soon receive an email with details of your subscription options and I'll make sure to keep you notified of any upcoming Q&A events as well as when the guitar presets will be available.
The presets haven't been made yet. They are part of the Reverse Engineering Of The Brown sound episode, which hasn't been recorded yet.
More info will be coming to you soon as well as new episodes. Ep. 2 with Steve Vai takes premieres this Thursday at noon PST.
Just finished part 1. So good...it was so interesting to hear you and Steve (I call him Steve like we’re buddies) discuss the different challenges in breaking down VH and then Eddie have the same challenges trying to breakdown your Dad’s music. Something that intellectually makes sense but I had never considered. Can’t wait for part 2. Be well.
Really looking forward to the content and the Helix presets...I have both Native and the Stomp running through a 5150iii. Hoping to see a 4CM preset that will take advantage of that setup. If not pretty sure we can just reverse engineer the reverse engineer to suit our needs. FWIW Like you Fair Warning is my favorite album, but I do think his tone and the mix on Diver Down is way overlooked. Looking forward to other's perspectives. BTW a murders row of guests...thanks for putting this together.
Thanks for jumping in. I hope you enjoy the series. I'll keep your suggestions in mind when we make the presets for the Helix. I too love the tone on Diver Down! Especially "The Full Bug." The tone is still mean like Fair Warning but doesn't have the richness of the mids and low end. A different sound but still a very good one!
5150 bundle instabought! Thank you, Dweezil for putting this podcast together. Your unique insight into Eddie's music is warmly welcomed by all of us VH fans!!
QQ1: Will you (pretty please) release this awesome a cappella version of runnin with the devil/Dweezil? :)
QQ2: Will the brown sound presets be Axe-FX II compatible? (vs. only for the most recent versions of the Axe)
Thank you for the kind words! QQ1 - Maybe I will. QQ2 - I had not planned on that but now that you bring it up I will keep that in mind so that the presets will work for both AXE II and Axe III. Enjoy the bundle! Best, DZ
Just subscribed to the 5150 bundle. I’m looking forward to all the upcoming episodes, particularly the Fair Warning episodes! Also, can’t wait for the presets for the Helix! Stay safe!
Thanks! Fair Warning is my favorite VH record for sure! I recorded 2 complete episodes about it. I spoke with Nuno Bettencourt for nearly 4 hours about it and another 2 hours with Billy Corgan! The guitar presets that will be made will include a few Fair Warning inspired presets.
Hi Dweezil, looking forward to enjoying these episodes and hearing all these great players talk VH! Got the 5150 bundle. Hope you and the band are all safe and well, so close to catching the Hot Rats tour to Australia before we all went into lockdown. I'll be there whenever you make it back to Australia in the future. 2018 Melbourne was fantastic. Cheers!
Thanks so much! I wish we could've made it down there. Hope to be able to return. At some point, I plan to mix an entire Hot Rats Live concert and release it here.
Hi Dweezil! Thanks for making this content available!
I just purchased the whole bundle. Will there be an email on the content that becomes available ( for example, the subscription to Premier Guitar, the Line 6 presets, etc. . . )? I haven't seen more info on this so I figured you were still working on the details and thought it best to ask to see how things will happen.
Thanks so much for your output. Just wonderful to hear so far ( I'm listening to the Steve Vai/DZ podcast now as I'm typing this and it's sublime ).
I'm glad you are enjoying the podcast! Yes, you are correct about working out the details of the presets etc. Regarding the presets they have not been created yet. They will be part of the "Reverse Engineering The Brown Sound" episode which has not been recorded yet. Big plans for that episode! I will have news for all 5150 Bundle members about their Premier Guitar Subscription options this week and you will receive an email. Best, DZ
Man-oh-man, I fit the demographic!! I'm an EVH nut...I was twelve in 1982 and have been acting hypnotized, by all things VH, ever since. I have thoughtfully viewed the VH phenomenon, as an outsider, from all sorts of angles and tangents over the years. I think my most favorite, most unresolved, fascination with him is contained in this thought: we (the world at large) witnessed, first-hand, the good...the widespread powerful good...that can come from journeying to the center of yourself (introversion) and courageously sharing the results. What EVH unearthed within himself and shared is astounding. To me, it's the sound of frenetic enthusiasm. How fortunate are we to be the beneficiaries?
I am really looking forward to what you endeavor upon!! It's gonna be GREAT!! Einar William Freberg (Billy)
Wow Dweezil just listened to the first podcast and that was fantastic! The other day someone posted a photo of Eddie Van Halen with Allan Holdsworth from that evening Steve Vai ran into Edward. Ed went on stage that night with THAT purple guitar you guys were just talking about. Stupid question but I gotta ask...I assume that is the inspiration for your Z-era epic tune “Purple Guitar”?

Does anyone know if the 1-year subscription to Premier Guitar that comes with the bundle is available world wide? Is it hardcopy or digital? Thanks
Hi Vinicius,
Yes! If you have ordered the 5150 bundle, you will receive an email this week with info about your subscription options.
Best, DZ
Great interview. The Purple Kramer Pacer you and Steve mentioned. Rockinger Tremolo system. Heard Ed hated it. Picture of Ed on stage was from the Holdsworth show Steve saw.
I never knew that purple Kramer guitar turned into that fruity pebbles striped guitar.
Never knew it was called the Fruity Pebbles guitar.... It is now. I like it.
That's just how I referred to it.

Really looking forward to listening to these, the short clip I heard from the first Steve Vai episode sounded great will listen to it all later today.
Hi Simon,
Thanks! I hope you enjoy it! I'm working on the 2nd half of the Steve Vai episode now. It will be out this coming Thursday.

Hi Billy,
I agree, EVH was brilliant in many ways and we are lucky that he found a way to share his talents with all of us.
Hi Buddy,
Yep, Purple Guitar definitely took most of its inspiration from that experience. Glad you're enjoying the podcast!
