This is a gonna be a long one, bear with..Wife got me 5150 Bundle for Xmas. I'm listening to the first episode, and I love it. I don't know how I'll fare with Billy Corgan talking about Fair Warning, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it, lol..
So, I'm a metalhead guitarist who loves Ibanez 7's, especially the Universe (Thanks, Steve). And people who know me know I also love the first 4 VH albums immensely. So, to honour Eddie and still be able to play gigs with my 7's, I'm repainting Ibanez 7's with EVH classic paint jobs. Pic of Bee7 is down below. Also doing a Universe Frankie. Probably sacrilegious but I don't give too much of a shit.
Dweez, your first time touring Melbourne Aus with ZPZ, you asked the audience to come up with a name of a song that you were going to make up right on the spot. I think you had Ray White as guest vocalist at the time..Anyways, I stood up and yelled, "I'm getting married tomorrow!" Which was true, you and I had had a small chat (wife was not with me, but I took her to the ZPZ tour after that, and she GOT IT), and you played a song you made up on the spot. It was lovely!! Her Frank 'fave' era is different to mine, but we both love Frank. So much so I have Frank tattooed on my left forewarm. It's been about 14 years, and yes, still married. Getting EVH tattooed on my right forerarm when I find "thee pic."
I never saw Frank live, but I wished I had. I wished I had seen VH sooner. First gig I saw was 1984, I was 15. My musical heroes are Frank and EVH. There's a fun-ness to their music. Every band I've been in has that spirit. And that is a direct Frank influence.
And lastly, mad respect for your guitar progression. In the beginning you pretty much wore EVH on your sleeve. Now, with the Gambale economy picking and you having to learn Frank's music, you're pretty much a beast on guitar and in my opinion underrated, which is bullshit. I thank the universe for you being here.
Hi Doug, Thanks for joining in on the podcast and thanks for the kind words! Congratulations on 14 years of marriage! Nice tattoo! I think you'll like the Billy Corgan episode, Fair Warning is his favorite Van Halen album. BTW his signature amp (Grace) from Carstens amplification is very VH and sounds killer. I have one in my studio and I love it.
Yo!! Yeah, I'm sure Billy's fine. I have a cold and I'm grumpy. The WACF stuff with you and Blues Saraceno is great!! You guys sound like friends in real life. You guys should do a podcast together. How tight are you two? WACF is probably my fave album, and Fools is the goddamn bomb. Catch!
Thanks Jim! Merry Christmas to you too! Yes, there was a big iCloud problem and my computer ground to a halt. I've got it up and running again so I'm trying to get back on track so I can get out of the loop of missed deadlines! I've 2 Nuno Episodes to finish and then Billy Corgan! Best, DZ
Merry Christmas again D and sorry for asking about episode,,,, I saw you posted a little “fair warning” regarding this week’s episode on Instagram lol. Duh my bad ,, didn’t see before my post. Hope all is well and happy festivus lol
Dweezil, any possibility that one of these 30 or so podcasts could include Jacob Deraps? Like you, I found him on YouTube a few years ago. Then saw you included him at one of your shows in Canada. Quite gracious of you to help a relative unknown guitarist. You guys were amazing together. I just think more people should know who he is and see how much EVH rhythm and lead playing is truly flowing through him.
Oh this is so cool and rockNroll!! Thanks for all these Dweezil!
Quick question regarding the Paul Gilbert episode, where can I find the extended solo version of « Somebody get me a doctor » you played in the episode please? (Info/year/bootleg)
Thanks a lot, and cannot wait for all these episodes to come!
Merry Xmas! I'm glad you're enjoying the podcast. Offhand I can't recall which bootleg that version is from. I believe it's from one of the Pasadena Civic auditorium shows. You might search those first and see if you find it. There are multiple versions of Somebody Get Me A Doctor with the extended solo out there on the internet!
Dweezil, thank you so much for this! As you already know, this is so amazing. Listening to these stories takes me back to the days of being a kid and just anticipating the next thing to come out. Like waiting for the magazines with the next interview to come out! Great job! Thanks again!
Besides the Sunset Sound interview series on Youtube, this is the coolest thing you can get as a fan of Eddie and Van Halen. Of course, I had to have the 5150 package immediately! Thank you for this great podcast series! It's very sad that Eddie is no longer with us. But it comforts me a little that you can now find so many interesting interviews on the internet. I could listen to all of these contemporaries and their stories for hours. One final question: How do you get your one-year subscription to Premier Guitar? I can't find a link, but maybe I missed it. Greetings from Germany!
Don’t for one second under estimate the value of these conversations. Edwards loss is hard for all of us to process and having professionals of a similar age group fawn over his legacy makes the grieving process go a little better. I’m nearly 50 years old....my entire life as far as I can remember Van Halen has been on my turntable, cassette deck, CD player, MP3 player and iPhone. I have no special bond with the music that’s different than anyone else’s. I didn’t know Edward or grow up at Frank Zappa‘s house, but hearing your experiences personalizes it and humanizes a God amongst men. It wasn’t just a guitar playing or the smile, it turns out he was just a good dude too.
Oh... and Paul Gilbert is a freaking monster. He’s a human jukebox. Unbelievable. And your relationship with blues clearly translates through the conversation. It’s like listening to two brothers.
Absolutely *love* all these episodes & their varying tones: Vai the elder statesman, Paul the vibrant--damn near vibrating--VH fanatic, & Blues the old pal reliving a shared youth. Also, my wife cracks up every time I replay the clip about Blues in a paper bag--she always says, "well, cuz the dog"--so, even more than all the amazing music talk about the guy & the records who started it all for me (OK, after Kiss), thanks for providing us with our deepest, fullest laugh of the year. This rocks.
Really Looking forward to the fair warning episodes. I love hearing you talk about his unique guitars. Is it possible that the rasta/unchained guitar is so heavy because it has so many layers of paint and possibly a maple body? I had read that Frankenstein was possibly a type of ash Thanks Dweezil!
Dweezil - just finished the W&CF episodes with Blues. First great hearing the two of you play off each other. Great genuine talk and I can listen to that all day. Plus when you get into the specific phrasing and influence and the details. Wow. Thank you so much. This is what I have always wanted. I hope we get to hear the same for other guitarist like you and your dad. The perspective the topics just amazing potential. Thanks for this great gift to the fans. Happy holidays to you and your family and I’m looking forward to my favorite album Fair Warning
Thank you so much! I'm glad you're enjoying the episodes. I do plan to do podcast series about my dad's music one of these days. It will be epic and super detailed! Working on the Fair Warning episode. Sorry for the delay!
DZ - This comment may not belong here, but I'm thinkin that you may see it. I have purchased everything that you have to offer on this site. I also purchased the t-shirts relating to the bullshit that you went through with the ZPZ name. So. I am looking for you to take your considerable wit, whether it be a quote, or a lyric, and plaster it on a quality t-shirt, along with your name. Put me down for 2 XXL and 2 XL for starters. How about you take up a collection from us, put your name on the front, and our name on the back.
I got a reply from Reward Customer service confirming that only Ep 3 is available as flac and the rest are currently MP3 only - they didn't offer a next step to resolve. Thanks for your help. Loving the podcast so far - it's very special as far as all of the EVH content that's been coming out.
Really enjoying this series Dweezil! One thought on the "Johnnie Winter 'Yeah'" discussion on the 'Fools' track. It may be Johnnie Winter, but it also sounds suspiciously close to a uvular Gene Simmons "yeah!" circa 1970's. Diamond Dave used another vocal "Simmons-ism" on 'Beautiful Girls' in the line near the end of the song where he says "I love 'em, I need'em, can't do without'em, no!" This is a straight up Gene Simmons line from a Kiss tune. Yes, really ;-)
For those of you who aren't familiar with Simmons' early involvement in Van Halen check out these demos he did with them in 1976:
I am really enjoying the guests and the insights into the music and guitar of Van Halen. This had given me another reason to listen to the whole VH catalog again and am enjoying that too. Thank you for doing this.

Fantastic podcast! Worth ever cent! Can't wait for the next episode. It's the highlight of my week.Cheers!
Thanks Orjan! There's a lot more to come!
Merry Christmas!!! Curious is there a new episode this week?
Hi Jim,
Yes! I'm still working hard to finish it after my computer died. I'll keep you posted! It's got a great surprise in it too!
Awww that sucks. I didn’t know your comp died.
Hey,,, Merry Christmas to you and yours ( and thanks for the always quick responses).

I'm curious about how we claim our Premier Guitar subscription as well. Also curious when flac files of the episodes will be available. Thanks.

This is all so wonderful. Love every minute of it. What an incredible first episode. Thanks Dweezil and Steve
Hi Jefferey,
Thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying it. Happy Holidays!
Ha, a paper bag! I was laughing as hard as you guys, Thank You for that, these episodes are so good!
That was a very "Blues" story. Pretty darn funny.

Dweezil and Friends. My Fans Got My Back.
Hi Mike,
I will see what I can do! Thanks again for your support!
3 episodes in - pure musical joy is shared. Love it. Glad I took the plunge - look forward to what’s to come. Thank you!
So glad you're enjoying it. I think the Blues Saraceno episodes are going to take it up a notch for you.
Great podcast! The detail on this is insane. Note: The Nicolette Larson album came out in 78.
Thanks Michael! I do recall hearing that, I didn't have notes in front of me about that at the time of the interview.
OK - I pulled the trigger and am officially 5150, but can't find the download option for Flac for the Runnin' episodes - the browser says MP3.
Ep 1, 2, 4, 5 are available to me MP3 only and Ep 3 is Flac only.
Thanks for offering Flac, it was the determining factor for me going all in on this.
Stand by, that will be resolved soon. It's a housekeeping issue for the site. The files are large as you know. Working on that for you.
I got a reply from Reward Customer service confirming that only Ep 3 is available as flac and the rest are currently MP3 only - they didn't offer a next step to resolve. Thanks for your help. Loving the podcast so far - it's very special as far as all of the EVH content that's been coming out.
Dweezil,
This series is amazing. Thanks for being the guy who can lead this for all of us VH nerds.
Thank you!
