sean s.

have the axe 3 presets been released yet? signed up for the bundle and love it. thanks dweezil

Dweezil

Hi Sean,

Thanks! Glad you're loving it! The presets have not been made yet. They will be part of the episode on reverse-engineering the brown sound. We now have plans for that episode to be filmed! The presets will be made during the production of that episode. That will be a bit further down the line. Stay tuned and happy holidays!

I just wanted to say thank you Dweezil. Every once in awhile you feel like you found a pot of gold on the internet and this is one of those. I'm a lifelong VH fan, a fan of yourself and a fan of the guests. To hear you all talk and in some cases play parts on guitar about something we all love so much is incredible. I found short clips of this on YouTube, came here and grabbed the 5150 package. I've never been so happy I spent $51.50 in my life. I seriously can't thank you enough for this awesome show.

Dude, this is the best most informative podcast or any piece of media on VH, thank you for doing it. What is the most rare, unreleased outtake or demo that you have heard that’s not out there or known to the rest of us rabid fans?

Tigerbaby

Dweezil, quick question regarding the last podcast. You played a clip from a bootleg I presume of a jam called “The Red Zone”. That sounded KILLER! Where is that from?

Dweezil

That same song is also referred to as "Act Like It Hurts." You can find it here:

Hey Dweezil? Going through that July 85 GW magazine interview with Edward ( last night ), I found a quote from Edward on the sound of the bass for Fair Warning. When complimented about Mike's bass sound for the album, Edward responded with " Small bass amps. We used smaller bass amps for a tighter sound. " I'm curious is he used any bass amps for the guitar, since Edward has so much presence in those rhythm guitar tracks. And, does anyone know ( maybe Donn Landee? ) if Edward had always used the Shure 57s from the start? In 1996, an engineer at a studio in Reno ( called Granny's House ) once told me that Edward had used a Telefunken mic on some of his tracks ( he couldn't remember when these mics were used and on what tracks, sadly ). Didn't your dad use Telefunkens for his guitar tracks on live shows?

Thanks for these podcasts! Their TOTALLY getting me back into tone searching again.

Tigerbaby

I hate to be posting something negative here but I feel I have too... Five episodes in and I have to say you are absolutely ruining the chances of there ever being a guitar podcast better than this. It’s impossible... This is as good as it gets people. Best podcasts I’ve ever heard.

Dweezil

Thanks! Nice click bait too, LOL

For anyone wants to see/hear a little more, there is a brand new DZ interview at Sunset Sound:

Matthew S.

I don't play guitar, but in 1978 Edward Van Halen stopped me dead in my tracks when I first heard him.  Listening to you and Blues pick apart the nuances of his playing is awesome.  I am literally sitting on the edge of my seat with excitement, I wholeheartedly love all the episodes.  Can't wait for Fair Warning, especially "Push Comes to Shove".

Timothy J.

Excellent part two with Blues on WACF. Can't wait for the episode with Nuno on Fair Warning!

Matthew J.

...and is that Scheila Gonzalez doing the lead vocals on the Runnin’ With The Dweezil theme song?

Laserguided

I know the version Runnin' With the Dweeziil at the end of each episode is Jacob Deraps...

Dweezil

Adam Minkoff does the acapella vocals on the RWTD theme song.

The break down of Romeo Delight was so perfect. It's the "I'm The One" song of  Women and Children First.  When they blasted it at the US Festival it was so loud.

Great job with the Nicolette Larson segway... Too bad Ed wasn't given credit on the record. I had a copy of the album but lost it when the house burned down.

Dweezil

Romeo Delight is such a great tune! Glad you're enjoying the episodes.

Matthew J.

What an excellent observation by Blues referring to Ed’s slide work in “Could This Be Magic” sounding like (his dad’s) clarinet notes/style.  Nailed it!

another wonderful episode!!!

Dweezil

Thanks! Glad you liked it!

Great episode with Blues. A couple of things:

1.) In Guitar World magazine ( July 1985 ), Edward stated that intro to " Tora Tora " was a backwards guitar part ( intended as a overdub for " Everybody Wants Some " ) while at the end, he kicked an EMT plate. Donn eventually ran this part backwards as a joke and Edward liked it.

2.) " Fools " was recorded with the Shark guitar ( this was mentioned in the Van Halen Inside magazine, in 1996, when they did a special of the guitars used by Edward for the first three VH albums ). Like you and Blues noted, there is no vibrato bar at all on the tune.

3.) " Loss Of Control " was written around the same time as " Ain't Talkin Bout Love " and " Atomic Punk. " Their intent was to make fun of punk music ( this also comes from Edward in the Guitar World July 85 mag interview ). BUT, later on in a later 80s interview with Guitar For The Practicing Musician, Edward said " The Red Zone " was " Tora Tora " with a different arrangement. As far as I'm concerned, anyone who thinks Edward can't play rhythm guitar has not heard this tune. One of the greatest tunes VH ever wrote/performed. On the story of " Growth, " you are correct. In that GW mag 85 interview, Edward stated that " Growth " was intended to end " WACF " and start up " Fair Warning " but eventually never amounted to much so they left it.

4.) " Take Your Whiskey Home "-The acoustic intro was played on a borrowed acoustic guitar from the studio. Unknown model. Also from the GW July 85 interview.

5.) Didn't WASP's Chris Holmes loan a guitar to Edward for the making of this record?

Some questions for future episodes: Edward once said ( to the Inside Magazine issue on his guitars ) that the twelve string on " In A Simple Rhyme " is a Fender. So, is this the same guitar that Edward used for the main riff to " Cabo Wabo " on OU812? Lastly, I had been hearing rumors for years that " Secrets " was originally intended for " Fair Warning. " Would love to know how many more VH songs ( outside of " House Of Pain, " " Right Now " etc. ) were intended for other VH albums. Also, what is the story behind the solo to " So This Is Love? " I remember reading Edward did several passes that didn't work out so he played the same phrases from those passes but as a compiled take. Lastly, if you come across talking to Luke, I would love to know which amp Luke loaned to Edward and was it on " Fair Warning " or Diver Down? " For years, Luke claimed it was a Fender then in the nineties, Luke then claimed it was a Marshall head. I do know Edward used a Fender head from 1978 to 1983 as a tool for writing ( via 2015 Guitar Aficionado " magazine ).

Good stuff Dweezil. I'm total tone nerd for this stuff! Really enjoyed the newest episode!!

Dweezil

Thanks for the cool update David! I'm glad you're enjoying the series. Next week is Fair Warning with Nuno Bettencourt!

Kenneth R.

The "Act Like It Hurts" tease, and then.....

Would love to hear an analysis of that and other unreleased tracks.

Dweezil

Hi Kenneth,

I know! The episode was getting a little long in the tooth so I thought I was helping everyone by making a few cuts! When I can, I'll find a place to include more info about that song or other rare tunes.

Matthew S.

Thank you so much Dweezil, this is fascinating stuff. I hope you can tour, and come to Wisconsin sooner than later (We live near the 7th floor Sheraton Inn...guessing you read every word of every VH record front and back, as I did).  Would love to see you play live!

Dan C.

This series is sooo good! I found myself giggling with you and Blues at the beginning of Episode 4.

Michael M.

Love the breakdown of Take Your Whiskey Home . I never heard the feedback leading into the solo and now will never NOT hear it. And the nods the the Who and the Beatles on A Simple Rhyme dead on. And good to recognize Michael Anthony on this. I think his best album as he really drives a number of the songs. (and you are correct on the "legend" of Growth and I know I read an interview with Eddie in Guitar Player or Guitar World where he talked about it just as you described)

Fantastic.

Michael M.

This is great Dweezil. A quick thought. Although I do like VH3 and a massive fan of Extreme (can't wait for Nuno and Fair Warning) I get why you may not go through that one.  But how about you get Wolfgang to go through a Different Kind of Truth. That album is great and his playing (As Is, You and Your Blues etc) is stellar. I'll pay extra for that one!

Keep up the great work!

MM

Nuno should be very cool. Didn’t nuno produce one of your albums??  ( compression??)

Jim Angelucci

Just checking , didn’t know if page changed or something. It has been “ that kinda year”
