I'm not exactly sure what he was playing through since his amp wasn't visible on screen (we recorded remotely). I'm going to guess it was a Marshall with his standard pedal board. He was playing an Ibanez strat style guitar without a locking tremelo. I did alter the sound of the guitar for the epsiode during the post prodcution. I was trying to create an homage to the first 2 VH albums by making his mono guitar stereo by adding reverb and delay on the right side.
Hi, Dweezil- I just sprang for the 5150 package. Just wanted to say thank you for doing all this. I was utterly obsessed with Edward in my high school days back in the 80s as a tadpole guitar player. Over the years, my personal music style took a a different path from VH-style rock, but I always kept a spot in my heart for Ed and the band. Since his passing I've been immersed in the tributes to him, reassessing my VH albums...basically revisiting my youth and falling in love all over again. When I heard about Runnin' With The Dweezil I knew you were the perfect guy to undertake this project. I'm just one episode in, and I'm loving it. THANK YOU for all this effort. Can't wait for the rest of the episodes (and the Helix presets). Be well, sir.
GREAT episode with Paul Gilbert!! Love Paul! But his knowledge on VH 2 is amazing ( right down to the echoplex sound ). Really enjoying these shows. Thanks again for doing them!
This series gives unique and valuable insights. I know where I was when I first heard Van Halen, and how it affected me. This podcast brings me back to that moment in 1978 - that ability should speak volumes about the power herein. I knew at that moment, and upon the first listen that life for guitarists turned itself on it’s head. I also knew I could never play like that, so I went after TONE. It’s that takeaway that I still carry to this day. Thank you Dweezil for having this idea, this vision, and the drive to make this podcast a reality.
Oh! OK, I thought this stuff was already in the box. I'd like to buy this for Shane as a gift if I can please... as he was a big fan. I think he'd dig it.
Sorry for any confusion. We've been working on this series in pre-production for a while and have many episodes recorded but they have not been edited into the final versions yet. It's very kind of you to get the series as a gift for Shane. I will send you a DM on the best options for turning it into a gift. Best, DZ
I'm not finding the downloads for the 5150 package...it only seems to show 2 episodes for DL (Steve Vai) and the confirmation e-mail didn't have links to the content... Bueller anyone?
The podcast is still in production and the episodes are rolling out weekly. That is why you will see only 2 episodes currently. New episodes premiere each Thursday at noon PST. This week features PaulGilbert discussing VH II. Hopefully, that answers your question. Best, DZ
Dweez. Not sure you have seen this. From the Jimmy Page inducted in Hollywood Walk of Fame. Go to 2:41, Ed did really care about you too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXyBsXzTpBg
Unfortunately he opted out. We will still be covering the Women and Children first album in its entirety. I have a spectacular guest in mind. I'll keep you posted. Best, DZ
Good God... Episode 1 with Steve was great enough... But episode 2 with a song by song dissection by Vai and Dweezil was a Van Halen fan/guitar player's DREAM! Playing back and going over the tiny details was fantastic, and I can't tell you how many times I burst out laughing during these. Great stories, great analysis. I seriously cannot wait for the rest, particularly DeMartini. Cheers, Dweezil. Thank you for this!
Hi I bought the bundle but can not play the episodes. Only plays the first 5 mins and has the buy now feature ala carte. Any help would be greatly appreciated
Make sure you re logged in. Go up above and click on the 5150 (red, white, and black colors) package that you bought. THEN choose the episode from there. You should be good to go.
Dweezil - This analysis of VH! is simply the best I've ever heard. As a guitar player, the parts you pick out of Eruption and You Really Got Me and the rest are the parts that so few pick out but are the parts I've always loved (and struggled with :). Clearly have spent a thousand hours on this like many of us. Thank you so much for this unparalleled dissection!!
Thanks for the kind words. I'm so glad you're enjoying the podcast so far. I think you'll have fun with the next episode! Paul Gilbert does a lot of great guitar playing while talking about Van Halen II.
Didn't even know this existed! Couldn't buy the 5150 Bundle fast enough. Love the old stories. Love how much Frank was idolized by the musicians and guitar greats we know so well today. Hope more people can listen to this. Dweezil are you releasing a new concert? All the best and hope 2021 we will all be able to hit the road again. Cheers everyone.
Episode #2 is awesome. See, these kinds of in-depth shows are really what I love to listen to/watch. Podcasts are great ideas, of course. But content such as the stuff in episode #2 is really what music fans need to experience. There is so much more than simply talking about music. Going into the rabbit hole when it comes to the nuances of music is really what will help audiences go deeper with any music.
Funny enough, my introduction to EVH started with " 1984 " through the song, " Jump. " But it didn't take a genius to see what these guys were doing. I went backwards when it came to hear EVH's music, as an influence ( I actually heard " Fair Warning " before hearing VH1 ). To this day, I feel " Fair Warning " is the greatest EVH guitar sound let alone the greatest recorded guitar tone ever put to tape. Sheer audio bliss.
Stellar content, Dweezil. Nicely done. Looking forward to the newer shows ( especially with Joe Satriani ).
Fantastic interview with Steve. Thanks so much for putting this content together. Listening to Steve recall what is was like as a guitarist, not just a hobbyist but as someone going to school for music, in 1978 listening to Eruption for the fist time was wonderful. As he was someone studying guitar at the time I'd be curious to know if Steve had any idea what was going on in the tapping section. I know the technique existed before Eddie but I have no idea how well know it was to guitarists of the day in 1978 or if Steve had heard that sound before that moment.
I wish I could remember the first time I heard it but I know I hadn't started playing guitar at the time so the idea of this crazy sound coming from an instrument that I had a familiarity with wasn't possible. I can only equate it to listening to Shampoohorn in 1994 and hearing Rubberband for the first time. I remember it like it was yesterday, I was laying on my bed with headphones almost drifting to sleep after having worked all day. It took all of about 4 notes and I sat up like as if I had just rose from the dead. I knew it was guitar but it was a sound I had never heard before and I couldn't wrap my head around what I was hearing. I probably listed to it half a dozen times before I thought to look at the liner notes for some information about what I was hearing. So thank you Dweezil for that cherished memory and that wonderful piece of music.
Thanks for your comment. I'm glad you're enjoying the podcast. In next week's episode, Paul Gilbert talks about some stuff that might give you an answer to your question about EVH's tapping.
I'm glad you like Rubberband. I'm going to do a new mix of that one of these days.
wow
Glad you're enjoying it!
This episode with Paul Gilbert is fantastic. Absolutely interesting and insightful commentary. Curious: what was Paul going through for his tone?

Sounded killer. Many thanks. Really enjoying the podcast so far.

Episode 2, 12:16-12:32 repeats the end comments on 'the last show of the tour' segment, "...we did, he sang it, and it was funny.."
Hi Tim,
Thanks, I'll check it out so I can fix it. If it is in there it's unintentional.
There was a glitch in the export and I was able to fix it. Thanks for catching it!
Thank you sir! Let's keep it a surprise!

Hi Joe,
Thanks for sharing! I haven't ever seen that before.
That was cool!
Thank you. All good. Interesting and introspective. Great stuff
Hey Dweezil I see Warren DeMartini is no longer listed with "Women And Children First". Is he no longer going to do one?

Saw this on Twitter and the 5150 bundle was a no-brainer. I thoroughly enjoyed episode 1 and can’t wait for the rest.
I already own a Helix so I’m really looking forward to the Brown Sound episode but I’m “worried” that this might “force” me to get a Fractal as well
Thanks for doing this!
